Chinese ballast water management system (BWMS) maker SunRui Marine Environment Engineering has two proposed projects accepted by the International Organization for Standardization (known as ISO). Its approvals were issued on Monday (5 March) after consideration by ISO officials.
These projects mark “the first international standards in the BWMS field using the electrolytic method,” SunRui said in a statement to MP today. They will “provide significant and reliable technical support for hydrogen safety measures, health and risk assessment in terms of design, installation and risk control requirements on ballasting water management system using the electrolytic method,” the statement predicted.
The projects are ISO 23314, Health and Risk Assessment on Ballast Water Management System using Electrolytic Method, and ISO 23315, Hydrogen Safety Measures on Ballast Water Management System using Electrolytic Method.
Member states of ISO’s Technical Committee on Ships and Marine Technology (ISO/TC8) “have given enthusiastic response and support” and have added both standards to that committee’s work programme, the statement said. China, Japan, USA, Russia, Denmark and Panama have nominated experts to take an active role in developing the projects, under SunRui’s leadership.
As well as their technical focus, the two standards will also focus on international convention requirements and the “urgent demand on how to implement the [IMO Ballast Water Management] Convention,” SunRui’s statement said.
The company sees this initiative as raising both its own profile and China’s, saying that it will support China’s standing in international maritime circles and “expand the influences of SunRui and other national brands on global shipping.”
