Lubricants are never far from tanker operators’ minds according to the feedback Tanker Shipping & Trade culled from an analysis of the five top stories on LinkedIn. With the MEPC meeting this week, and the Sulphur Cap 2020 Conference next week, the news that ExxonMobil’s next-generation lubricant analysis tool measures fuel sulphur content, too, is timely.
“We have designed this next-generation service to support our customers with the evolving challenges they face. Using the onboard service, they will benefit from accurate analysis of their engine’s performance in real-time which will help them make smart decisions and, ultimately, lead to efficient vessel operation.” said ExxonMobil director, aviation and marine lubricants, Pamela Skaufel.
Mobil ServSM Cylinder Condition Monitoring will be launched in July. As well as the ability to measure fuel sulphur content, this is service is said to deliver significant cost savings for operators and manage and improve engine protection and optimise performance.
“Vessel operators are under increased pressure to improve efficiency and drive cost reduction initiatives,” said ExxonMobil global field engineering manager Iain White. “This next generation scrape down oil analysis service can identify issues such as over or under-lubrication, cold corrosion and the presence of cat fines.”
Operators will receive recommendations on feed rate and cylinder oil to optimise engine lubricant consumption. This will enable users to act on recommendations quickly, before they escalate into potentially catastrophic problems that can often lead to significant costs.
